Minimalism Relationship

Rich Kids

I’m always exploring new music and recently discovered Judah and the Lion. They have a truly minimalist message in their song Rich Kids. A very enlightened view by such a young band in an age where musicians usually portray success as extreme financial wealth, cars, yachts, and private jets. Watch an episode of MTV Cribs (is that even still a show?) and you will see material excess on parade, making the people who watch think that that’s what life is supposed to be. Is that what my life would be even if I won the lottery? No, it would not be much different than my current life except that I’d have more time and resources to make a difference in the community around me.

I digress.  As I listened to the lyrics listed below, I realized that I feel like I owe my children and my extended family an apology.  I’m sorry that I missed so many of your events and just missed weekends and evenings while I worked two and three jobs.  While I did instill the value of hard work and was a great example of that, I still failed.  I was working the extra because I felt that I needed to provide a bigger home, fancier cars, better vacations and “stuff”, things that really didn’t matter in the long run.  The cars are gone, the house is gone, and so is some of that time we could have spent doing anything else.  I hope you forgive me, you were never second in my heart but I was misguided and caught in the web of compulsory consumerism.  My hope is that my children, my future wife, and everyone who may read this spends their time and directs their efforts towards the things that really matter.

“Rich Kids” by Judah and the Lion

You spent your life trying to make all your money.

Your accounts are full, but all you’ve found is that you’re empty.

Ain’t it funny how the simple things in life

are the only things that really matter?

Your life is complicated, found your dreams are overrated.

Now you’re old and wanna go back.
But you can’t.

Ha!
We’re rich.
We don’t got no money.

We’re just a bunch of kids,

but we’re rich

and we don’t got no money.

Ha!
You spent your life running away from your family.
In your old age now it’s all that you’re wanting.

Ain’t it funny how the simple things in life

are the only things that really matter?

Your life is complicated, found your dreams are overrated.

Now you’re old and wanna go back.

But you can’t.

Ha!
We’re rich.
We don’t got no money.

Yeah, we’re just a bunch of kids,

but we’re rich

and we don’t got no money.

Ha!
Yeah we’re a bunch of rich, rich, rich, rich kids.
Yeah we’re a bunch of rich, rich, rich, rich kids.

Yeah we’re a bunch of rich, rich, rich, rich, rich, rich, rich, rich, rich, rich kids.

Yeah, we’re rich.
We don’t got no money.

Yeah, we’re just a bunch of kids,

but we’re rich

and we don’t need your money.
