Christmas 2015, the new “Normal”

“Normal” is an overused word that is such a moving target I don’t know why we even use it anymore. As I have gotten older, I have seen so many things that I once accepted as “abnormal” become my new normal. Once upon a time I couldn’t imagine myself supporting gay rights, but I do. Once upon a time I couldn’t imagine the idea of paying for a bottle of water, but I do, although not that often. These are two quick examples, trust me, there are hundreds.

This Christmas was very good and quite memorable. For starters, on December 25th, I didn’t have my kids around me, Naoma didn’t have her boys either, and it was 78 degrees! So, we went running in First Landing State Park….. and I was shirtless (ok that’s not that abnormal, but it is a first on Christmas  day) Naoma and I had a quiet Christmas Eve and exchanged gifts after going out for a fantastic dinner at Mannino’s Italian Bistro in Portsmouth, Va.

All of our kids returned to us on Dec 28th and Naoma prepared a home made traditional Italian Seafood feast of Fried Calamari, Siricha Honey Butter Shrimp, and 4 cheese Ravioli with Spinach, Mushrooms, Scallops and Shrimp in a creamy cheesy sauce. (“Yeah… That’s normal… Not”) Oh yeah, she also made a white chocolate peppermint bark cheesecake from scratch. All this amazing ness was followed by watching the five kids one by one open their gifts from youngest to oldest. Many laughs were shared and everyone truly had a very enjoyable evening. I have never felt closer to everyone together before. It was a moment where anything seemed possible. If this is my new “normal”, I’ll take it!
